Every practice builds a language, and every language keeps someone out. The vocabulary of BDSM is no exception: until you have it, you hover at the edge of rooms, approximating, nodding at words you have not quite pinned down, reluctant to ask because asking would reveal how new you are.\n\nI want to dissolve that. These words were never designed as a membership test. They exist for a plainer reason \u2014 so that two people can say, with precision, what they want, what they refuse, and where the line between those two things runs. Precision is not the enemy of desire. It is what makes desire safe enough to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What follows is roughly forty terms I actually use, in sessions and in workshops. Each gets a single-sentence definition, then a few lines for what the definition leaves out. Read it through, or come for one word and leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1. Consent and Legal Frameworks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Informed Consent<\/strong> \u2014 Consent given freely by a person who understands what they are agreeing to and who can withdraw it at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three conditions carry equal weight. A yes extracted by persistence is not free. A yes given without knowing what will happen is not informed. And a yes that cannot be taken back is no longer consent \u2014 it is a contract. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Negotiation<\/strong> \u2014 The conversation that precedes a scene, in which it is established what will happen, what will not happen, and how it will end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many beginners think that negotiating kills desire. It\u2019s actually the opposite. We can only let ourselves go within a framework whose boundaries we know. I explain the entire process of a session here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft limit<\/strong> (soft limit<\/em>) \u2014 A practice that we don\u2019t rule out, but one that requires certain conditions: trust, time, gradual progress, or simply a specific day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A soft limit is a maybe, not a hesitant yes. The distinction matters enormously. Soft limits are not reached through persistence; they are built. Honoured patiently over months, one may become a favourite. Pushed once, it becomes a hard limit permanently \u2014 and you will have taught the other person that their boundaries are negotiable under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard limit<\/strong> (hard limit<\/em>) \u2014 A practice that we categorically reject, under all circumstances, without having to justify ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the one entry in this glossary that does not bend. A hard limit is not negotiable, not circumventable, and owes no explanation. \"I don't want to\" is a complete sentence. A Dominatrix who needs to understand why before she accepts it has misunderstood what a limit is. why<\/em> Before agreeing, he didn't understand what a limit is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SSC<\/strong> \u2014 Safe, Sane, Consensual<\/em> : safe, sane, consensual. The first ethical framework formulated by the BDSM community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RACK<\/strong> \u2014 Risk-Aware Consensual Kink<\/em> : a practice undertaken with full knowledge of the risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RACK has largely displaced SSC for an honest reason: nothing is perfectly safe. Driving is not safe. RACK says something truer \u2014 the risk is real, we understand it, we accept it with open eyes. It asks for competence rather than reassurance. I've written more extensively about SSC and RACK.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRICK<\/strong> \u2014 Personal Responsibility, Informed Consensual Kink<\/em> : Everyone is responsible for their own decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe word<\/strong> (safeword<\/em>) \u2014 A prearranged word that immediately stops the scene, regardless of the context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It must be a word you wouldn't say by accident. \u00abNo\u00bb and \u00abstop\u00bb are often part of the game; \u00abpineapple,\u00bb much less so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Color System<\/strong> \u2014 A graduated safety scale: green<\/strong> (Everything's fine, keep going), orange<\/strong> (slow motion, something tenses up), red<\/strong> (immediate shutdown).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The orange is the most useful of the three and the most underutilized. It allows you to make adjustments without interrupting everything, and it teaches you to communicate your status before an emergency arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safesign<\/strong> \u2014 A nonverbal signal\u2014dropping an object, tapping three times\u2014for times when speaking is not possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe Call<\/strong> \u2014 A call arranged with a trusted person at a specific time, before and after meeting someone you don't know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basic safety practices, which are all too often overlooked in the heat of the moment. A few tips for staying safer.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Roles and Dynamics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dominant<\/strong> \u2014 The person who leads the scene, decides how it unfolds, and carries responsibility for its safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word power misleads here. Dominating is not taking. It is carrying. Anyone who has done both feels the difference immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submissive (sub)<\/strong> -- The person who entrusts the leading of the scene, within limits they have set themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submission is not the abandonment of control but its temporary, conditional delegation. The submissive draws the perimeter; the Dominant decides only what happens inside it. This is the reversal most people never hear, and it changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switch<\/strong> \u2014 A person who takes on both roles, depending on the situation, the partner, or their mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistress \/ Master<\/strong> \u2014 A relationship-based title, within an established and generally long-lasting dynamic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domme<\/strong> \u2014 A common abbreviation for \"Dominatrix.\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Dominatrix<\/strong> (pro-Domme<\/em>) \u2014 A woman who practices BDSM domination in a paid professional setting, usually without sexual or genital acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distinction is fundamental and defining: a professional session does not involve sexual intercourse and is not an escort service. What exactly is included in a professional session?.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top \/ Bottom<\/strong> \u2014 The one who applies a practice and the one who receives it, with no hierarchy implied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bottom is not necessarily submissive. You can take a flogging while retaining every ounce of your authority \u2014 and for some people that is precisely the appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\/s<\/strong> \u2014 Dominance \/ Submission<\/em> : the psychological and relational aspects of the exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\/M<\/strong> \u2014 Sadism \/ Masochism<\/em> : the sensory aspect; the pleasure derived from giving or receiving an intense sensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can practice one without the other. Many D\/s relationships do not involve any pain; many S\/M scenes do not involve any hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protocol<\/strong> \u2014 A set of agreed-upon rules of conduct that shape relationships both on and off stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ritual<\/strong> \u2014 A repeated gesture that marks the entrance onto the stage or the exit from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ritual does far more work than it appears to. It tells the body that the rules have changed \u2014 and, afterwards, that they have changed back. More on ritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPE<\/strong> \u2014 Total Power Exchange<\/em> : a dynamic in which authority extends to all aspects of daily life, not just to the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanilla<\/strong> \u2014 Anything outside the realm of BDSM. Descriptive, never derogatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. What Happens During and After<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scene<\/strong> \u2014 A time-bound segment with a beginning, an end, and agreed-upon content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session<\/strong> \u2014 The term used for a professional scene, typically lasting one to three hours. Personally, I prefer 3- to 4-hour sessions most of the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subspace<\/strong> \u2014 An altered state of consciousness into which the person being subjected to it may slip: detachment, euphoria, altered perception of pain, difficulty speaking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subspace is pleasant and treacherous in equal measure. It is precisely the state in which consent becomes least reliable, because the person in it will often agree to anything. This is why negotiation happens before, and never during.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topspace<\/strong> \u2014 The equivalent state in a dominant person: extreme concentration, altered perception of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subdrop<\/strong> \u2014 A physical and emotional slump that occurs after a scene, sometimes the next day or the day after that, caused by hormonal changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domdrop<\/strong> \u2014 The same phenomenon is seen in the person who was in a position of dominance. Less discussed, but just as real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aftercare<\/strong> \u2014 The time it takes to calm down after an outburst: rehydration, warmth, physical contact, talking, and simply being there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aftercare isn't just a nice extra added at the end. It's part of the practice, and its absence is the most reliable sign of a lack of seriousness. Subspace, subdrop, and aftercare, in detail.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edge play<\/strong> \u2014 High-risk procedures, which require genuine technical skill and a precise understanding of contraindications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debriefing<\/strong> \u2014 The conversation that follows once we've come back down: what worked, what was missing, and what we'd adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The Practices Mentioned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bondage<\/strong> \u2014 Restraining the body with ropes, straps, handcuffs, or other restraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shibari<\/strong> \u2014 The Japanese art of rope, in which the aesthetics of the bond are just as important as the tension it exerts. Bondage, shibari, and sensory deprivation.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sensory deprivation<\/strong> \u2014 The deliberate suppression of one sense\u2014sight or hearing\u2014to heighten all the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Percussion<\/strong> (impact play<\/em>) \u2014 Any form of controlled striking: hand, whip, riding crop, cane\u2014each producing a distinct sensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanking<\/strong> \u2014 The most accessible form of percussion, and often the first step into the world of percussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flagellation<\/strong> \u2014 Percussion using a strap-based instrument, the sensation of which ranges from a gentle caress to a sharp bite, depending on the material and the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sensory Games<\/strong> \u2014 Exploration through sensation rather than intensity: feathers, ice, wax, textures, temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wax<\/strong> (wax play<\/em>) \u2014 The use of candles with a low melting point, whose appeal lies as much in the anticipation as in the warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickles<\/strong> (tickling<\/em>) \u2014 An underrated practice that results in an immediate loss of control without any pain. The \"tickle session,\" explained.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chastity<\/strong> \u2014 The deliberate control of access to pleasure over time, usually through the use of a device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appeal lies not in the deprivation itself, but in what it creates: a constant sense of momentum, even from a distance, even on an ordinary day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edging<\/strong> \u2014 Bringing someone to the brink of pleasure and stopping, repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erotic Humiliation<\/strong> \u2014 The deliberate use of speech, staging, or body language to create the impression the person is seeking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word is unsettling\u2014and rightly so. What distinguishes erotic humiliation from humiliation in general lies entirely in the negotiation: the words chosen together, the themes excluded, and the fact that the person on the receiving end asked for it. Role-playing game<\/strong> \u2014 A scene built around a plot and characters: medical authority, school administrator, interrogation, abduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consensual kidnapping<\/strong> \u2014 A kidnapping scenario that was entirely negotiated in advance, including the unpredictability itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical role-play<\/strong> \u2014 A role-playing exercise focused on clinical imaging\u2014instruments, protocol, examination\u2014without any actual medical procedures. The medical scenario.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fetishism<\/strong> \u2014 An erotic attachment to an object, a material, or a body part: leather, latex, shoes, uniforms. The fetish session.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often the most misunderstood\u2014and the most profound. Some people find a sense of satisfaction in a properly executed maintenance task that no percussion instrument could ever give them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munch<\/strong> \u2014 An informal gathering of kink enthusiasts in a public, vanilla setting, with no kink activities taking place there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Four Misconceptions Worth Clearing Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BDSM and abuse are not the same thing.<\/strong> They are opposites. BDSM is based on consent, which can be withdrawn at any time, and is negotiated. Abuse is defined precisely by the absence of these three things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain and suffering are two distinct things.<\/strong> Pain is a sensation, and a sensation can be desired. Suffering is what we endure against our will. A well-crafted scene can contain a great deal of the former and none of the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submitting does not mean being weak.<\/strong> Most of the people who come to see me hold considerable authority in their lives. Letting go of control requires more strength than holding on to it\u2014and often more self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A professional dominatrix is not an escort.<\/strong> These are two different professions, each with different frameworks, skills, and limitations. Confusion is common, and there\u2019s no shame in having been confused; it\u2019s best to clear it up before making initial contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the difference between a soft limit and a hard limit?<\/strong> A hard limit is an absolute refusal, valid under all circumstances and without justification. A flexible limit is a practice that can be considered under certain conditions\u2014trust, progress, and timing. The former is never up for debate; the latter is built over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is a security password required?<\/strong> In my experience, yes. Even in a long-term relationship, even when there is complete trust. A safe word doesn't indicate a lack of trust\u2014it makes trust possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you withdraw your consent in the middle of a scene?<\/strong> Always, immediately, without having to explain yourself. That is the very meaning of the word \u201csafety,\u201d and a serious Dominatrix stops without asking any questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glossary is never complete, and this one is no exception. BDSM vocabulary evolves along with practices, varies from one community to another, and is difficult to translate. Most terms remain in English because no French equivalent has become widely accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
